Welcome at European Makers

In November 2001 European Makers Gallery opened its doors in the lower level of an historic building in the Amsterdam 'Spiegelkwartier', close to the Rijks-museum .

We exhibit and sell contemporary applied art. The emphasis lies on wonderful ceramics, glass, textiles and also paintings by established and new and upcoming artists from all over Europe. Our collection is carefully selected and exhibited in a light and serene space, enabling the visitor to fully appreciate and enjoy the works of art in all their beauty.

Hanna Järlehed
'

Swedisch ceramist Hanna Järlehed attempts to safeguard and develop the possibilities to express emotions, moods and processes in ceramic materials. To her ceramic objects may be considered as photographs that freeze the material’s movement in time. From this prospective, cracks, fractures, drops etc. emerge as the documentation of a course of events rather than as defects. Jarlehed’s objects are all made in porcelain clay mixed with stoneware clay. The shapes emerge through a process of throwing the clay e.g. on the floor or pounding it against a hard surface.
Then she fills the cracks etc. with thick layers of glaze and glass. Her vessels appear as containers of symbolic substance, and she sees her glazes at the bearers of the different feelings she wishes to express.
